Air filters catch particles present in the air before they enter the engine. On average, an air filter processes about 10,000 litres of air per litre of fuel.
If the intake air is insufficiently filtered, dirt particles such as dust or rubber abrasions enter the combustion chamber of the engine. This leads to increased wear on pistons, piston rings, cylinder walls and valves.
The contamination can also make its way into the engine oil via the piston rings, thereby reducing the service life of the oil filter.
In order for an engine to function properly, clean oil must circulate through the system under pressure.
This prevents metal from rubbing on metal, for example in the plain bearings of the crankshaft and camshaft or all other contact surfaces. The oil also contributes to engine cooling by removing heat from the pistons, cylinders and turbochargers.
